    Tribune, Hornell, NY, Aug. 18, 1969 Mrs. Harriet Hodge, 89, formerly of Hornell, died Saturday at Wellsville Nursing Home. She was born in Cohocton and lived most of her life in Hornell. She was the widow of Everett Hodge. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Hornell for over 50 years. Surviving are 3 sons, Preston Hodge of Rochester, Wesley Hodge of Belmont and Kenneth Hodge of Clarence; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth McKnight Church of Angelica; a sister, Mrs. Laura Call of Hornell. Services will be at the Bender Funeral Home in Hornell Tuesday at 2 p.m. with burial in Hornell Rural Cemetery.

In 1889, in the year that Harriet Hodge was born, on May 31st, the South Fork Dam collapsed. Located in western Pennsylvania, the dam failed - sending more than 20 million tons of water into the towns below it. The flood killed more than 2,200 people in and around Johnstown. The newly formed Red Cross responded to the disaster.

In 1902, at the age of merely 13 years old, Harriet was alive when the Aswan Low Dam (the old Aswan Dam) began construction in Egypt in 1899 and was completed in 1902 - making it the largest masonry dam in the world at the time. The dam was built on the Nile River in order to conserve water and regulate flooding, allowing for population increase along the Nile.
