In 1817, in the year that Harriet Floyd Bloore was born, on June 12th, German inventor Karl Drais created and rode a dandy horse - also called a "Draisine" or "Laufmaschine". It was the earliest form of a bicycle and had no pedals - the dandy horse was wooden and ridden by running or walking while sitting on the bike.

In 1824, Harriet was only 7 years old when in May through July, King Kamehameha II of Hawaii and his wife Queen Kamāmalu - who was his half-sister - travelled for a state visit to London. While in London, they both contracted measles and died a week apart.
