  • Introduction

All I know is that he was in the Army when he was young and served in the Korean War. My father (as well as my grandmother) both suffered from Alzheimer’s but he entered that in his late 50’s. He never spoke of the war..I only found that out when he passed away at 63 years old. He loved to walk..which became a problem as his mind started to diminish! He escaped us a few times. We got a phone call one day from the Dallas Love Field Airport to come pick him up because he snuck into a restricted area.

In 1938, by the time he was just 9 years old, on June 25th (a Saturday) the Fair Labor Standards Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt (along with 120 other bills). The Act banned oppressive child labor, set the minimum hourly wage at 25 cents, and established the maximum workweek at 44 hours. It faced a lot of opposition and in fighting for it, Roosevelt said "Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, ...tell you...that a wage of $11 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry."
