Jill Marie (Routh) Rucker
Halbert was my paternal grandfather. Grandpa was a hard worker. After the war he worked the Mid-Continent oil derricks of Oklahoma. Then took jobs as the family moved westward to pursue better opportunities. He was an antique clock and watch repair mechanic for as long as I can remember he loved to tinker and fix things. There's one lasting memory of him that never fades and that is the smell of his cherry tobacco smoke mixed with his sweat. He smoked a pipe while he worked but it is one of the last things I remember. As a child smoking fascinated me as did watching him work. Grandfather loved bacon and eggs, and ate them nearly every day. One of the complications of his lifestyle was coronary artery disease. Halbert was one of the first open heart surgery patients at UCLA Medical Center in the 1950's. He married my paternal grandmother LaVaughn (Howerton) Routh in Missouri. LaVaughn's family resided in Buffalo and Dallas County Missouri. They had two children, Bernice (my aunt) and James Halbert - my father. Grandfather Halbert and Grandmother LaVaughn divorced. He was married twice after their divorce.
