In 1916, in the year that Gregore Gast was born, the U.S. National Park Service - part of the Department of the Interior - was created by an act of Congress in August. In 1931, at the age of only 15 years old, Gregore was alive when in March, “The Star Spangled Banner” officially became the national anthem by congressional resolution. There was fierce debate about making "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem - Southerners and veterans organizations supported it, pacifists and educators opposed it.
