    Gladys Perkins, 83, died Wednesday, July 16, 1997.Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Victory Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Chaffin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors.Mrs. Perkins was born in Nevada, Mo. After spending her early years in midwestern Kansas, she attended Dague Business College in Wichita, Kan.She married Ivan S. "Bud'' Perkins in 1933 at Rozel, Kan. They made their home in Guymon, where Mrs. Perkins was involved in many church and community activities.She was an active member of Victory Memorial United Methodist Church and the Martha-Ruth Circle. She also was a member of the High Plains Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Rose Garden Club. She was a 64-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had been in the Guymon Chapter No. 419.Survivors include her husband; a son, Ivan S. "Si'' Perkins III of Guymon; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.The family requests memorials be to a favorite charity. Memorials will be accepted at Henson-Novak Funeral Home, Box 1306, Guymon, Okla. 73942.

Begun by the French in the 1880's and abandoned, the United States undertook further construction in 1904. After 10 years, and the elimination of malaria carrying mosquitoes (which caused immense delays for the French and the Americans), the 48 mile long artificial waterway - a series of locks - created a shortcut for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
