At the time of his military registration on June 30, 1942, he was 19 years old and resided in Mt. Kisco, West, New York. The registration took place in Katonah, New York. Joseph was employed by Viking Furniture Co. On February 19, 1943, Joseph Palmiotto enlisted in the United States Army in New York City, New York. His military serial number was 32810651. He held the rank of Private and was categorized under the selectees (enlisted men) component. During World War II, Joseph Palmiotto proudly served as an Army veteran. He was assigned to an anti-aircraft artillery unit and participated in the Normandy campaign. On April 14, 1951 he married Geraldine Rita Petitti (1929–2003) in Schenectady, New York, USA. The couple had three sons together. He had a passion for gardening and architecture and loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren.

    Joseph Palmiotto, 94, passed away peacefully on December 4th 2016. Born in Bari, Italy, he came to the U.S. as a young boy. He was formerly of Elm Street in Schenectady, N.Y. and Tryon Avenue in Scotia, N.Y. He was a proud Army Veteran of World War II and served on the anti-aircraft artillery unit in Normandy. Joseph was a member of the local Northeast Carpenter's Union for over 50 years and built several homes in Schenectady, N.Y. Joseph was also a devoted parishioner of St. Luke's Church in Schenectady, N.Y. and served as an Usher and Acolyte, as well as President of the Holy Names Society. He had a passion for gardening and architecture and loved to spend time with his family and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine "Rita" (Petitti) of 51 years. Arrangements by the Daly Funeral Home on 242 McClellan Street in Schenectady, N.Y. Entombment will be at the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery Mausoleum in Niskayuna, N.Y.

In 1922, in the year that Giuseppe Joseph Palmiotto was born, on James Joyce's 40th birthday, his book Ulysses was published in France. The book covers the experiences of an Irishman in Dublin on an ordinary day, 16 June 1904. Now considered a classic, it was controversial at the time. Due to some sexual content, the book was banned in the U.S. during the 1920's and the U.S. Post Office destroyed 500 copies of the novel.

Severe droughts continued to hit the Great Plains and the dust storms devastated agricultural production as well as people's' lives for several years. The Roosevelt administration and scientists eventually determined that farming practices had caused the conditions that led to the dust storms and the changes they implemented in farming stopped the Dust Bowl.
