George Thomas Shugg of Maryborough, Central Goldfields Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1908 in Maryborough to Samuel Shugg and Sarah Jane (Cowden) Shugg. He had siblings Herbert Vivian Shugg, John Samuel Shugg, Myrtle Shugg, Louisa Jane Shugg, Minnie Eliza Shugg, Doris Rose Shugg, Walter Roberts Shugg, Bessie Gladys Shugg, Edna Jean Shugg, Olive May (Shugg) Belcher, Albert Roy James Shugg, Barbara Ann Shugg, and Alexander Greer Shugg. George Shugg died at age 89 years old on November 9, 1998.

In 1908, in the year that George Thomas Shugg was born, a 7.1 earthquake and the resulting tsunami killed 70,000 to 100,000 people in southern Italy and Sicily. The earthquake, lasting 30 to 40 seconds, occurred in the Strait of Messina which was between the region of Calabria (at the "toe" of Italy) and the island of Sicily and destruction from it occurred in a 186 mile radius. It was the most destructive earthquake ever to hit Europe.
