In 1861, in the year that George Samuel Asker was born, on April 12th, the Civil War began with shots fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The Confederate Army attacked the Fort a little over a month after the inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln. Fort Sumter surrendered the next day.
