    George R. Terry of New York was born to Franklin Wesley Terry (1835 - 1906) and Eunice Page White (1836 - 1896). He had siblings Thomas L. (1860 - 1935), Ferris W. (born 1864), Charlotte "Lottie" (1867 - 1937), Katherine E. "Kittie" (1872 - 1931), and John Wesley Terry (1875 - 1935). George Terry first married Christina Abigail Terry (1883 - 1911) in 1906. He then married Edith A. Ross (1893 - 1968) on March 19, 1912 in Boston, Massachusetts, and they had a daughter, Emily J. Terry (born 1914).

In 1898, at the age of 21 years old, George was alive when on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.
