George Finlay of Mentone, City of Kingston County, VIC Australia was born in 1848 in Glasgow, Glasgow City County, Scotland United Kingdom to James Finlay and Montgomery Hunter Finlay. He had siblings Margaret Finlay, Mary Finlay, James Finlay, and John Finlay. He married Annie Rutherford Finlay, and had children William George Finlay, Frances Maude Finlay Jellett, Arthur Robert Finlay, and Alice Montgomery Finlay. George Finlay died at age 81 years old in 1929 in Mentone, City of Kingston County, VIC Australia.

In 1848, in the year that George Finlay was born, on November 1st, the first medical school for women - but founded by a man - opened in Boston. Called the Boston Female Medical College, and later merging with the Boston University School of Medicine, women could officially attend medical classes and be trained as physicians.

In 1850, at the age of merely 2 years old, George was alive when on March 7th, Senator Daniel Webster of Massachusetts delivered the "Seventh of March" speech. Trying to avoid a civil war, he endorsed "slave states" and "free states" and the Fugitive Slave Law, which directed federal officials to "recapture and return runaway slaves".
