George Coe, Actor, and Director of a Bergman Parody Dies at 86 By Margalit Fox July 24, 2015 George Coe, a film, stage and television actor who earned an Oscar nomination for his single picture as a director — the 1968 short feature “De Düva: The Dove,” a mock-Swedish-inflected sendup of Ingmar Bergman that has endured as a cult favorite — died on July 18 in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 86. His daughter Amy Bickers confirmed his death. Mr. Coe, whose half-century-long career encompassed roles on Broadway; in movies like “The Stepford Wives,” “French Postcards” and “Kramer vs. Kramer”; and — in a seminal if seldom-remembered achievement — in the original cast of “Saturday Night Live,” also served for more than a decade on the board of the Screen Actors Guild. In “De Düva,” of which Mr. Coe was a director (with Anthony Lover), producer (with Mr. Lover and Sidney Davis) and star, he out-Bergmaned Bergman. About 14 minutes long and shot in brooding black and white in the woods of upstate New York, the film features Mr. Coe, in heavy age makeup, as a professor looking back on his love (read: lust) for his comely sister, Inga. The screenplay, by Mr. Davis, is a lilting stew of ersatz Swedish (a great many words end in -ska), with a bissel Yiddish thrown in. In proper Bergmanesque fashion, Death, portrayed by a black-shrouded Mr. Davis, materializes to play Inga in a game of badmintönska. “De Düva” was nominated for an Academy Award for the best live-action short subject and proved wildly popular on college campuses. Writing in The New York Times in 1968, Vincent Canby called it “an extremely amusing spoof.” The film also stars Pamela Burrell as Inga and Madeline Kahn, in her screen debut, as the woman who pines for Inga. “Somedaysk,” Ms. Kahn sighs, “Inga loven mir.” George Julian Cohen was born on May 10, 1929, in the Jamaica section of Queens and reared on Long Island. He adopted the surname Coe early in his acting career. After attending Hofstra College (now Hofstra University), he spent four years as a Navy man on submarines during the Korean War. Aboard the sub, he did a comedy radio broadcast, fell in love with performing, and on his discharge studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. In 1975, Mr. Coe, playing various roles, was seen in the first episode of Season 1 of “Saturday Night Live.” In that episode, and in nearly a dozen subsequent appearances on the show, he served as a conspicuously grown-up counterweight to the youthful anarchy wrought by Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, and their ilk. He had recurring or guest roles on scores of other TV shows, among them “Hill Street Blues,” “Max Headroom,” “Thirtysomething,” “Murphy Brown,” “L.A. Law” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” On Broadway, Mr. Coe was in the original casts of the musicals “What Makes Sammy Run?,” “Mame,” “Company” and “On the Twentieth Century.” On film, he played the head of the advertising agency for which Dustin Hoffman works in “Kramer vs. Kramer” and a Stepford husband in “The Stepford Wives.” In later years, Mr. Coe, a resident of Pacific Palisades, Calif., concentrated on voice-over work. He was long heard on Toyota’s television commercials and supplied the voice of Woodhouse, the title character’s butler, on the animated series “Archer.” Mr. Coe’s first marriage, to Nancy Baker, ended in divorce, as did his second, to Karen Foray. His survivors include his third wife, the former Susan Massaron; two daughters, Ms. Bickers and Jennifer Coe, both from his first marriage; and four grandsons. Writing in The Times about “De Düva,” which was notable not only for its polyglot pidgin but also for subtitles that were deliciously unfaithful to the dialogue, Mr. Canby recounted what happened when it was screened at the New York Film Festival in 1968: “At the showing at Philharmonic Hall, a number of patrons at the festival yesterday didn’t realize that what they were hearing on the soundtrack,” he wrote, “was strictly Svensk American. “ ‘My God,’ said one man with alarm in the balcony, ‘is this the feature?’ ”George Coe died on July 18, 2015 at 86 years of age. He was born on May 10, 1929.
