Geoffrey Chart 1881 - 1917

Geoffrey Chart of Cape Province South Africa was born on September 17, 1881 in Mitcham, Surrey County England to Robert Masters Chart and Julia Florence Octavia Chart (Nee Robinson). He had siblings Christopher Chart, Robert Chart, Florence Chart, Minnie Chart, Constance Chart, Stephen Chart, Martin Chart, Esther Chart, Winifred Chart, Eric Chart, Pattie Chart, and Roland Chart. Geoffrey was baptized on October 22, 1881 at St Peter & St Paul's Church in Mitcham. He married Margaret Amelia Mitchell, and had children Florence Eleanor Chart and Charles Geoffrey Chart. Geoffrey Chart died at age 36 years old on September 23, 1917 in Frezenberg, FlandersFlanders Belgium, and was buried in 1917 at Nine Elms British Cemetery I. E. 6. in Poperinghe.

  • Introduction

    Geoffrey Chart grew up in Mitcham, Surrey (now part of the London Borough of Merton). His father was an archtictect and surveyor, and also the Parish Clerk and a local Justice of the Peace. Geoffrey attended Whitgift Grammar School, Croydon, Surrey. On Leaving school he worked as a clerk in his father's architect's practice. He volunteered for service in the Second Boer War, but did not see active service. He was posted to South Africa where he undertook clerical duties connected with aftermath of the Boer War conflict. After demobilisation from the army, he later returned to South Africa (in what capacity is unknown) and lived in Cape Province. He met Margaret Mitchell, who is believed to have been keeping house for her brother, Charles Mitchell. Geoffrey and Margaret were married in the Presbyterian Church in Woodstock, Western Cape on 7 April 1908. They had two children, Florence Eleanor and Charles Geoffrey. At the outbreak of the First World War, Geoffrey Chart enlisted with the 4th Regiment of the South African Infantry (South African Scottish) and was posted to Flanders, where he saw active service. He was wounded in action in September 1917 and died of his wounds a few day later. He is buried in the Nine Elms British War Cemetery, Poperinghe, Belgium. His widow, Margaret, returned to her native Northern Ireland in 1920, taking the two children, Florence and Charles Geoffrey, with her. They lived in Bangor, Co. Down. She died in 1936 in Bangor. Her daughter, Florence, married and had two children. She died in 1946 in England. Her son, Charles Geoffrey, became a minister in the Irish Presbyterian Church. He died in 1976 and is buried in the churchyard at Second Keady Presbyterian Church, Keady, Co. Armagh. Geoffrey Chart is survived by two grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren.

In 1881, in the year that Geoffrey Chart was born, on October 26th, the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" happened in Tombstone, Arizona. The gunfight lasted only 30 seconds - the Earps and Doc Holliday on one side and the "Cowboys" on the other side. The McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton of the Cowboys were killed. Two of the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday were wounded.
