Edna Geneva (Higgerson) Mince's History: 1918 - 2007

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Geneva was an extrovert and enjoyed life. When she was young, Charlie Chaplin was all the rage, and she used to dress and walk like him putting on regular shows for her younger sisters, my mother, Evelyn, and Margie and their mother. Because Geneva was so much older than my mother, Evelyn didn't know who that girl was who came by the house, ate, and put on little skits. She didn't realize that Geneva was her sister until she matured some! Geneva was sent to her grandmother Lizzie (Weckenmann) Mertens and Leo Mertens, Sr.'s, home when Geneva was 10 years old to take care of them in their old age. They lived about a mile or two apart. Geneva cooked and cleaned and tried to go to school and have some social life, while she was there and stayed until the old folks passed on, after which Geneva became betrothed and married Ralph Irvin Mince.

  • Ethnicity & Family History

Geneva was a Caucasian. Her ancestry goes back many generations in Virginia and in Germany. She has some Irish, Scottish, English, Greek, and Italian ancestors.
  • Nationality & Locations

Geneva was born in Prairie County, AR where she married, resided, and gave birth to her two children. In the early 1940s, they all moved to Norfolk County, Virginia, because her brother, Harold, was going into business for himself and needed a farmer--her husband--to come take over the Schweitzer farm he was managing off today's Centerville Turnpike South, which later was known as the Mince Farm.
  • Early Life & Education

Geneva did not finish high school to graduate because she married.
  • Religious Beliefs

Geneva was a member of Centerville Baptist Church on Centerville Tnpk S in Chesapeake when she resided at Hickory. She taught Sunday school to children about 5-7 years old, and her daughter, Nancy, played the piano. I know because I was in her class! When she moved to Amherst County, she was a member of Poplar Hill United Methodist Church, which was built from the rocks on Rocky Creek, which passed through the Mince Farm on Rt. 60W. At both places, she worked very hard in the kitchen helping with dinners and bake sales, etc.
  • Professional Career

Geneva could do just about anything! She had a catering business in Amherst and catered a wedding of the daughter of J.C. Cash, which I recall because I helped her. She prepared ALL the food and many of the decorations in the social hall. Whether she did more weddings when I wasn't there, I cannot recollect. It was very hard work.
