Due to irrigation and the import of water, Los Angeles was the ideal place to grow oranges - which became a popular addition to Christmas stockings.

In 1928, by the time he was 42 years old, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August.
