He married Elizabeth Avery Neil in 1887, and had children Lilian Mary Neil, Leonard John James Neil, Gilbert George Neil, and Jessie Annie Neil. Francis Neil died at age 66 years old on January 9, 1927 in Warrandyte, City of Manningham County.

The trip took 10 days and the riders carried 49 letters, five telegrams, and newspapers for San Francisco and other cities along the way.
