Mother's Day 05-10-2015
When my daughter, Holly was just 6 years old she met Mr. Saxinger who had just turned 80 years old. The friendship that developed between them was very special, he was such a positive force that he made a lasting impression on my daughter. When she turned 23, she sent me and many of her friends and family the following letter about her dear friend,Mr. Saxinger. My beautiful daughter passed away just three years after writing this letter. I miss them both so much and pray with all my heart that they rekindled their friendship up in heaven.

Tonight I thought of someone I haven’t thought of or spoken of in many years and I’m not sure why because this person touched my life in such a special way that he should cross my mind daily, but as most of you, I got too caught up in my day to day busy life that I forgot to take the time to remember the important pieces of my life. This person and story is very special to me and I am sharing it with you because you are special to me.

When I was 6 or 7 years old my mother used to shop at the Winn Dixie off of San Carlos & Summerlin. We went there numerous times a week and every time we would go in to shop, there would be an old feeble man in his 80’s that bagged groceries. After frequenting there enough he got to know both my mother and I on a name to name basis. He would always have the nicest things to say and greeted us with the biggest smile from ear to ear. He’d always have a lollipop for me or some kind of trinket of small cost for me. I remember always looking forward to our visits to Winn Dixie specifically because of him, he made me feel special.

My mother cleaned apartments in the same complex as this man lived and we soon ran into him at this development. He kindly invited us in and we got to see how this 80 year old man lived, whom had outlived all of his family and was basically on his own with no one to love or care for him but yet he had so much love to give to others. I remember the musky scent of his house like it was yesterday and the stacks and stacks of newspapers throughout his house, almost like an episode from the series, Hoarders. My mother cleaned this mans house a few times to help him out, free of charge because it was obvious that he was on his own with very little money other than the income he had from Winn Dixie.

One day at Winn Dixie he gave me a gold and pink butterfly necklace with a detachable piece that looked like a heart. It was beautiful and I wore it for months and months. It was obviously an expensive piece of jewelry and I remember my mother and I discussing how he must of saved up for months to be able to buy this piece of jewelry. Instead of worrying about his bills or own health he was more concerned with putting a smile on a 6 year old girls face with curly blonde hair.

After he gave me this necklace my mom and I got very busy with our every day lives and weren’t able to make our regular trips to Winn Dixie. Once we finally had the time to go there this kind man was not there during our visit to shop. We thought maybe he was off that day and carried on with our day. Later that week, we went in again and he wasn’t there again. My mother cared deeply for him as well so out of genuine concern we drove to his home to find out that he had passed away. My heart was shattered.

Today I took that butterfly pendant out of my jewelry box where it’s sat for a number of years and while all the memories of this man have been far from my thoughts for almost 17 years I remember every detail as if it were yesterday.

I guess the point I am trying to convey here or share with you, is that we should never lose contact with those whom we have loved, love, or with those whom have touched our lives in a special way because you never know when they will be gone. Mr. Sax (what we called him for short because of his name and that he bagged sacks of groceries) I never expected to be gone. He was one of few very important people in my life that have passed amongst my father and grandfather that I was never able to say goodbye to or tell them I loved them once last time.

I love you and cherish every memory I have with you.

Sincerely,
Holly
