Francis Ignatius Hughes 1874 - 1939

Francis Ignatius Hughes of Fitzroy North, VIC Australia was born in 1874 in Yarram, Wellington Shire County to Thomas Hughes and Ann Malone Hughes. Francis Hughes had siblings Thomas Edward Hughes, Margaret Jane (Hughes) Jones, Charles Hughes, Maria Louisa (Hughes) Austin, Mary Ann Hughes Biggs, and Agnes Caroline (Hughes) Moulden. He married Catherine Margaret Toner in 1907 at St Mary's Catholic Parish 269 Adelaide Street, in Maryborough, Fraser Coast Regional County, Queensland. They had children Mary Eileen Hughes, Kathleen Anne Hughes, and Gordon Francis Hughes. He would also marry Mabel Mary Burton in 1924. They had a child Cyril Ignatius Hughes. Francis Hughes died at age 64 years old on June 7, 1939 in Fitzroy North, VIC.

In 1874, in the year that Francis Ignatius Hughes was born, on September 14th, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred in New Orleans - the capital of Louisiana. Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.

In 1892, at the age of 18 years old, Francis was alive when on October 5th, the Dalton Gang was shot. The Gang was attempting to rob two banks - simultaneously - in Coffeyville Kansas but word spread of the robberies and townspeople with guns greeted them when they left the banks. Four members of the gang were killed - only Emmett Dalton survived his wounds and spent 14 years in prison.
