    Francis "Frank" Avent Gumm's parents were William Tecumseh Gumm (1853 - 1906), born in Tennessee, and Elizabeth W. "Clemmie" Baugh (1857 - 1895), also born in Tennessee. He had siblings Mary, Emmett, William, and Allie Gunn. Frank married Ethel Marion Milne (1896 - 1953) on the 2nd of January, 1914 in Superior, Wisconsin. They had children Suzanne, Dorothy Virginia "Jimmie", and Frances Ethel Gumm Frances Ethel was the famous singer and actor Judy Garland.

In 1886, in the year that Francis Avent Gumm was born, on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.
