  • Introduction

    Floyd, whose full name was Floyd Henry Dotter, was a veteran of World War Two. He enlisted in the Infantry as a private in the United States Army on September 24, 1941 and was discharged on June 10, 1946. He had completed grammar school at the time that he enlisted and he listed his civilian occupation as "semiskilled foundry occupations". He was single, no dependents and was a native of the state of Wisconsin, living in Lincoln, Wisconsin. Floyd enlisted in the Army in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was 67 inches and weighed 146 pounds at the time. For 3 1/2 years during World War Two, Floyd was a prisoner of war. He was on the Bataan Death March where 60,000 to 80,000 prisoners of war (American and Filipino) were made to walk between 60 to almost 70 miles. Many died on the "walk" - the estimates range between 5,000 to 18,000 Filipinos and 500 to 650 Americans. There was also severe abuse of the men reported. Floyd's parents were Henry and Anna (Lemke) Dotter. He married Ruth Hecht (1924 - 2009) on August 24, 1946, and they had children Barry, Hal, Henry, George, and Gloria. He was also employed at Waukesha Motors and then moved to a farm in the town of Wood in 1948. He then worked for Pittsville Fur (sic) Foods and Sandhill Game Farm.     PITTSVILLE — Floyd H. Dotter, 74, Pittsville, died at 9 a.m. Nov. 23, 1993, at home. There will be no services. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Pittsville. Buchanan Funeral Home, Pittsville, is in charge of arrangements. He was born May 6, 1919, in Tomahawk, to Henry and Anna (Lemke) Dotter. He attended Dotter School, Tomahawk. Before his marriage, he worked on harvest crews in North and South Dakota and Montana. He then served in the U.S. Army from September 1941 until October 1946. He was a prisoner of war for 3½ years and was on the Baton Death March. He married Ruth Hecht Aug. 24, 1946, in Waukesha. He was employed at Waukesha Motors before moving to a farm in the town of Wood in 1948. He then worked for Pittsville Fur Foods and Sandhill Game Farm. From 1964-76, he was owner and operator with Diamond Transportation of Racine. He retired in 1976 due to ill health. He was a life member of American Ex-POW and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 7131 of Pittsville. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Gloria) Dibble of Pittsville; four sons, Hal of Wisconsin Rapids, Henry of North Pole, Alaska, Barry of Rochelle, Ill., and George of Vancouver, Wash.; one brother, Otis of Tomahawk; and 10 grandchildren.
