Ethler Stewart of Cloverdale, Putnam County, Indiana was born on April 26, 1894. He was married to Beulah Phillips, and had children Ruby Jean Holland, Robert Stewart, Douglas Stewart, and Mary Elizabeth Stewart. Ethler Stewart died at age 86 years old in December 1980.

In 1894, in the year that Ethler Stewart was born, on April 21st, a coal miners' strike closed mines throughout the central United States. The Panic of 1893, and the resulting depression, hit coal miners hard and the miners only struck for 8 weeks - they couldn't afford to live without their wages any longer.

In 1909, he was only 15 years old when the New York Times published the first movie review. It was a report on D.W. Griffith's movie "Pippa Passes" also called "The Song of Conscience", a silent film. The review said that this work was moving away from "lurid material that attracted the wrath of censors and concerned citizens and toward more respectable ends. The movie was the story of a young female factory worker, on her day off, wandering and singing - thus changing the hearts of those around her towards good.
