  • Introduction

    She had the funniest sort of titter for her laugh and it was infectious. She was vegetarian and only weighed about 86 # and stood maybe 5'1.... As a young married woman she worked in a lumberjack camp in Maine and made all kinds of dishes using lard. One time on the phone she told me how to make rice cakes and more recipes I'd never heard of from that time and most likely it was deer or moose lard she used. Her mission in her work later was to prevent dogs and cats being used for research. She knew I loved animals and gave me information about the Antivivisection society where she worked. The literature was full of photos of dogs suffering skin grafts and more. It was so graphic I remember it to this day more than 50 years later. In her will a large bequest went to Greenpeace which I was so glad for.

Her maiden name was Procter and she worked at her mother Clara's millinery shop in Lewisburg PA until she was married (briefly). I'd love to hear from any Procters from the Susquehanna region of PA. "Eppie" was my grandmother's cousin and quite a character to say the least
