Ethel (Veale) Knight of Ararat, Ararat Rural City County, VIC Australia was born on January 23, 1878 in New Zealand to William Edward Veale and Elizabeth Hunt Veale. She had siblings Elizabeth Eveline Veale, Rosa Veale, Lillian "Lillie" Jane Veale, William Henry Veale, Alice Veale, and Helen Veale. She married Allan Ernest Alfred Knight in 1902, and had children Gladys Ethel Knight, George Alfred Knight, and Allan Arthur Knight. Ethel Knight died at age 87 years old on August 1, 1965 in Ararat.

In 1889, Ethel was only 11 years old when on May 31st, the South Fork Dam collapsed. Located in western Pennsylvania, the dam failed - sending more than 20 million tons of water into the towns below it. The flood killed more than 2,200 people in and around Johnstown. The newly formed Red Cross responded to the disaster.
