Ethel Miller 1886 - 1959

Ethel (Hay) Miller was born in 1886 to James Arabian Hay and Rachel Kellas Hay, and had siblings Winifred Jean Hay, Leslie Harold Hay, Albert Ernst Hay, Florence Fawcett, Thomas Kellas Hay, Clifford Colonso Hay, and Wilfred Jean Christie (Nee Hay). Ethel Miller died at age 73 years old in 1959, and was buried in 1959.

    Ethel Miller is the eldest daughter & child of James Arabian Hay and Rachael Hay (nee Kellas). Her younger sibblings are: 1. Albert Ernest born 1887 2. Amy Isabella born 1889 3. Irene Ruby Block (nee Hay) born 1891 4. Leslie Harold born 1893 5. Florence born 1896 6. Myrtle Lillian Baker (nee Hay) born 1897 7. Clifford Colenso born 1901 8. Wilfred Lionel Fraser born 1904 9. Winifred Jean Christie (nee Hay) born 1907 10. Thomas Kellas Hay born 1909 Ethel Hay married Duncan John Miller. They had 1 daughter - Maisie. Maisie married Robert Eades in WW2. Ethel Miller and her husband had been living in Albury, NSW at the time of the passing of her father James Arabian Hay. She subsequently moved to Sydney and was living at 47 Cressy Street, Canterbury. Ethel's husband, Duncan, passed away on 24 August 1958, a year before Ethel. Duncan's death notice appears in the Sydney Morning Herald dated 25 August 1958. Ethel Miller passed away, aged 73 years, on 12 November 1959. Her death notice was published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 13 November 1959. Maisie Eades passed away on 16 December 1980. She and her husband had 2 sons - John Francis and Rick.

In 1886, in the year that Ethel Miller was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1892, at the age of only 6 years old, Ethel was alive when on October 5th, the Dalton Gang was shot. The Gang was attempting to rob two banks - simultaneously - in Coffeyville Kansas but word spread of the robberies and townspeople with guns greeted them when they left the banks. Four members of the gang were killed - only Emmett Dalton survived his wounds and spent 14 years in prison.
