    Ethel Elizabeth Fontanella was born to Americo Fontanella and Elizabeth Gilmartin. She had siblings Virginia, Alfred T., and Joseph Fontanella, all of whom predeceased her. Ethel Fontanella married John J. Shean, who died in 1964. She then married Arthur W. Kennelty on June 29, 1968, in Wantagh, New York. Ethel had two children, Robert E. Shean and Patricia Spillane. Ethel and husband Arthur Kennelty moved to Hadley New York in 1975 and spent most winters in Key Largo, Florida, until the late 1980s.

In 1919, in the year that Ethel Kennelty was born, Indian lawyer Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Satyagraha campaigns, beginning the nonviolent resistance movement against British rule of India. Satyagraha means "holding onto truth" and the campaign for India independence, which was eventually obtained, called for "self-suffering" rather than inflicting suffering (i.e., violence) on others.

In 1928, by the time she was just 9 years old, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
