Ethel Elizabeth (Drayton) Searle of Geelong, Greater Geelong City County, VIC Australia was born in 1884 in Geelong to Frederick James Drayton and Margaret Taylor Drayton. She had siblings Catherine May Drayton, Alice Maude (Drayton) Trebilcock, Basil Thomas Drayton, Baxter William Drayton, Margaret Taylor Drayton, and Frederick James Drayton. She married Ernest Arthur Searle in 1908, and had children Clarence Ernest Searle, Francis Clifford Searle, and Marie Jean Elizabeth (Searle) Thomson. Ethel Searle died at age 85 years old on December 18, 1970 in Geelong.

In 1884, in the year that Ethel Elizabeth (Drayton) Searle was born, on August 5th, the cornerstone for the base of the Statue of Liberty - a gift from the people of France - was laid. 120,000 people - most donations were $1 - donated to the completion of the base. An 1883 poem by Emma Lazarus was also written to raise funds. That poem was included in the base of the statue and is well known today. In 1911, she was 27 years old when the United States Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil in May. John D. Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.
