Estella Simpers died at age 95 years old on January 23, 2018 in Rising Sun, and was buried on January 26, 2018 at GRACELAWN MEMORIAL PARK 2220 N Dupont Hwy, in New Castle, New Castle County, DE.

    Estella M. Simpers January 8, 1923 - January 23, 2018 Estella Marie Simpers, age 95, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2018. Born in Chesapeake City, MD, on January 8, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elsie Reed Lotman. Mrs. Simpers retired from Terumo Medical, Elkton, MD, and previously worked for Textured Yarn and Baldwin Manufacturing Company as a machine operator. She enjoyed trips to Delaware Park and playing bingo. Survivors include her children, Elsie R. Prevento (Gene), Newark, DE, Alfred Simpers (Mary), Juno Beach, FL, Roger L. Simpers, Elkton, MD, and Judy M. Cissel, Rising Sun, MD; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Simpers was preceded in death by her husband, Roland O. Simpers. Funeral service will be held at 12 Noon, Friday, January 26, 2018, at Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD, where visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, DE. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Breast Health Center at Union Hospital, 106 Bow Street, Elkton, MD 21921.

In 1923, in the year that Estella Marie (Lotman) Simpers was born, Harlem's Cotton Club opened in New York City. Owned by a bootlegger and gangster, it was a 700 seat speakeasy that catered to a "white only" clientele. But most of the entertainers were African-American and featured some of the best entertainers of the time such as Lena Horne, the Nicholas Brothers, Ethel Waters, and Cab Calloway.

In 1939, by the time she was 16 years old, in May, Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length animated film, reached a total international gross of $6.5 million which made it (to then) the most successful sound film of all time. First released in December 1937, it was originally dubbed "Disney's Folly" but the premiere received a standing ovation from the audience. At the 11th Academy Awards in February 1939, Walt Disney won an Academy Honorary Award - a full-size Oscar statuette and seven miniature ones - for Snow White.
