Esme Ellen (Tredgett) Carroll of Coburg, City of Merri-bek County, VIC Australia was born circa 1898 in Camperdown, Corangamite Shire County to John Tredgett and Mary Wilson Tredgett. She had siblings Herbert Stanley Stanton Tredgett, Isabel Grace Tredgett, Miriam Violet Tredgett, Harold Oswald Tredgett, Clarice May Tredgett, Vera Maude Tredgett, Evelyn Mary Tredgett, and Kathleen Gertrude Tredgett. She married Edward Carroll in 1918, and had children Harold David Carroll and William Edward Carroll. Esme Carroll died at age 77 years old circa 1975 in Coburg, City of Merri-bek County.

In 1898, in the year that Esme Ellen Tredgett was born, on February 15th, the USS Maine exploded and sank in Havana harbor. The reason for the explosion has never been found, but it killed 266 men. "Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.

In 1944, she was 46 years old when on June 6th, the largest amphibious invasion in history was launched - the Normandy landing (called D-Day). Soldiers from the United States, Britain, Canada, and the Free French landed on Normandy Beach and were later joined by Poland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and the Netherlands. Almost 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers were involved. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on D-Day - Allied casualties on the first day were at least 10,000. 4,414 were confirmed dead.
