He had siblings Annie Alberta (Deans) Kemeys, Stella Frances (Deans) Glen, Florence Emma (Deans) Belfrage Brophy, Alice May (Deans) Rich, Edith Thelma (Deans) Godier, Percival Thomas Deans, and Horace Watkins Deans. Ernest Deans died at age 33 years old on September 10, 1922 in Cheltenham, and was buried at Footscray Cemetery in Yarraville.

In 1888, in the year that Ernest William Deans was born, Irishman John Robert Gregg published a pamphlet in the U.S., teaching his first version of shorthand - Gregg shorthand. When he improved on the first version and published it 5 years later, Gregg shorthand became popular.

In 1894, when he was merely 6 years old, large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.
