  • Introduction

    Ernest was born in Galgate Lancashire on 28th July 1919. The only son of Ernest James Stibbons and Deborah Anne Stibbons (nee Whiteside) known as Annie. Ernest had an older sister Dorothy Wilcocks, (nee Stibbons, my Grandmother), born 1915 Kirkham, Lancashire. Ernest was a police boy Clerk in Lancashire Constabulary (seaforth, Liverpool) then at 19 years old became a Police Constable first stationed in Garstang on 18th June 1939 then on 14th Jan 1940 Manchester. On the 20th August 1942 Ernest was called up for service in WW2 under the terms of the police and fireman war service act 1939. Ernest was killed in Action in Italy on 14th September 1944 aged 25 years.

In 1919, in the year that Ernest Whiteside Stibbons was born, in January, Nebraska was the 36th state to ratify the 18th Amendment, making it the law of the land. The 18th Amendment established Prohibition - a law against the production, transport, and sale of alcohol. Private consumption and possession were not prohibited. Several months later, the Volstead Act was passed, creating laws to enforce the Amendment. Bootlegging and bathtub gin followed.

In 1924, by the time he was just 5 years old, in May, wealthy college students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb kidnapped and killed 14 year old Robert Franks "in the interest of science". Leopold and Loeb thought that they were intellectually superior and that they could commit the perfect crime and not be caught. They were brought in for questioning within 8 days and quickly confessed. Clarence Darrow was hired as their defense lawyer, getting them life imprisonment instead of a death sentence. Loeb was eventually killed in prison - Leopold was released after 33 years, dying of a heart attack at age 66.
