Eric married my grandmother Hilda Gorden Smith when they were in their late fifties. He played the piano beautifully, and spoke several languages. I remember being told that he, his brother Charles and Omah, his mother escaped the Nazis. They were wine makers in Germany. He snuck in the storage area as a kid, and got really drunk he wrote in a sort of attempt at writing his story. He was really quiet, and would tune out through sleeping in his chair a lot. My grandmother was a more domineering personality, so he just sort of let her be in control. It is sad that she did not encourage him to share his story more. I was too young to know how important it was to appreciate the ordeal his family overcame, as well as the aspect of his culture that embraced the Arts so much more than we do in our country it seems.
