In 1886, in the year that Emma Shafer was born, on February 14th, the first train left Los Angeles for the East -by the way of the transcontinental railroad - with a cargo of oranges. Due to irrigation and the import of water, Los Angeles was the ideal place to grow oranges - which became a popular addition to Christmas stockings.

In 1913, by the time she was 27 years old, the Philippine–American War ended for good in June. While the official end of the war was in 1902, fighting continued for several years. The Catholic Church was no longer the state religion and English became the primary language of the government.
