Emily May (Donnelly) Quaine of Mentone, City of Kingston County, VIC Australia was born on March 1, 1914 in Newport, City of Hobsons Bay County to Michael Joseph Donnelly and Emily Alice (Smith) Donnelly. She had siblings Eileen Mary Donnelly, Mary Elizabeth Donnelly, Ernest Patrick Donnelly, John Francis Patrick Donnelly, Harold William Donnelly, Francis Michael Donnelly, and Alice Patricia Donnelly. She married Andrew John Quaine in 1935, and had children Francis Michael Quaine and Robert Julian Quaine. Emily Quaine died at age 75 years old in 1989 in Mentone, City of Kingston County.

In 1914, in the year that Emily May Donnelly was born, in only his second big-screen appearance, Charlie Chaplin played the Little Tramp, his most famous character. The silent film was made in January and released the following year. Of the character, Chaplin said: "On the way to the wardrobe I thought I would dress in baggy pants, big shoes, a cane and a derby hat. I wanted everything a contradiction: the pants baggy, the coat tight, the hat small and the shoes large." The moustache was added to age his 24-year-old face without masking his expressions.
