  • Introduction

Emil DeMarco was the owner of Lansing's oldest restaurant that closed in 2015, Emil's. He was born in Cosenza, Italy, a small town at the time that used to be not much besides dirt and few homes. Emil DeMarco arrived in the United States from a town in southern Italy shortly after World War I. After working on a railroad in Indiana, he came to Lansing and landed a job at Motor Wheel Corp. After he'd been in the U.S. for several years, DeMarco sent for his wife, Carmella, and daughter. By the time they reached Lansing, DeMarco had left Motor Wheel factory and started an outdoor fruit stand near the corner of East Michigan and South Clemens avenues, where the restaurant used to stand. During Prohibition, the fruit stand expanded inside the building to include an ice cream parlor. When Prohibition ended, Emil's got the first beer and wine license in the city of Lansing, and the ice cream parlor found a new life as a tavern. Emil's was a very popular place for older folks in Lansing, Michigan. Emil's grandson now holds the cherished restaurant's recipe as of 2015.
