Emil Cecil Artz c. 1926 - 1970

Emil Artz of Rye Street, in East Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut United States was born circa October 27, 1926. He was the parent of Constant Johann Adolf Artz. He married Maria Van Hartingsvelt Artz, and they had children Barbara Ellen Artz and Robert Ernst Artz. Emil Artz died at age 43 years old in February 1970.

  • Introduction

    I am Emil's daughter, Barbara Ellen. He and my mother (Marie Van Hartingsvelt), my two brothers, Constant and Robert and myself immigrated to the US. Emil and Marie were born and living in Indonesia which was a Dutch colony. During the revolution during the late 50's/early 60's we had to leave Indonesia and relocated to Holland. We then immgrated to the US and first resided in Florida. We then moved to Southwick, Massachusetts, and then moved to South Windsor, CT and then to East Windsor.

In 1926, in the year that Emil Cecil Artz was born, on November 15th, NBC was founded. It was the U.S.'s first major broadcast network. Ownership of the network was split between RCA (a majority partner at 50%), its founding corporate parent General Electric (which owned 30%), and Westinghouse (which owned the remaining 20%).

In 1934, when he was just 8 years old, on June 6th, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was formed as a response to the stock market crash of 1929 and the continuing Great Depression. Previously, the states regulated the offering and sales of stocks - called "blue sky" laws. They were largely ineffective. Roosevelt created a group (one member was Joseph Kennedy, father of the future President Kennedy) who knew Wall Street well and they defined the mission and operating mode for the SEC. The new organization had broad and stringent rules and oversight and restored public confidence in the stock market in the United States.
