Elmira Woodford 1825 - 1903

Elmira (WOODFORD) Tilton was born on January 5, 1825 in Noble County, Ohio United States to Allen (Allyn) Woodford and Aphia Woodruff Woodford, and had siblings Aranda Moses Woodford, Andrew Woodford, Helen Maria Woodford Colvig, Mary Leve Woodford, William Jerome Woodford, Elvira Woodford, Lydia Ann Woodford, Harry L. Woodford, George P. Woodford, and Hiram Woodford. She married Freeman Tilton, and had children George A.tilton, Sylvester Tilton, and Thomas Tilton. Elmira Tilton died at age 78 years old on February 17, 1903 in Belle Valley.

In 1825, in the year that Elmira Woodford was born, on October 26th, the Erie Canal opened. Construction had begun in 1817 and the completion of the canal provided passage from Albany New York to Buffalo New York and Lake Erie. Previously, pack animals had to be used to transport goods - there were no railroads - and the canal allowed goods to be shipped relatively easily and quickly.
