    Elmer Joshua Reid was born to Joshua Reid (1873 - 1939) and Louisa Josephine Goshier (a872 - 1959). His father was born in Ontario, Canada and his mother was born in Saginaw, Michigan. Elmer had eight siblings: Imogenne, Gordon, Gilbert, Infant (1908 - 1908), Florence B., Mary, Alice, and Chester Reid. Elmer J. Reid married Helen M. Sheahan (1904 - 1978) on June 6, 1927 in Mount Pleasant, Michigan and they had two sons, one of whom was Elmer J. Reid (1941 - 1996). When Elmer Reid was 41 years old, his World War II draft card described him as being 5 feet 7 inches tall and as weighing 170 pounds. He had brown eyes, black hair, and a "light" complexion.

Sigmund Freud, born Sigismund Schlomo Freud in May of 1856, is the "father of psychoanalysis". In 1931, at the age of 31 years old, Elmer was alive when on May 1st, the Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 1,454 feet (including the roof and antenna), it was the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970. (It is now the 34th tallest.) Opening at the beginning of the Great Depression, most of the offices in the Empire State Building remained unoccupied for years and the observation deck was an equal source of revenue and kept the building profitable.
