Ellen Theresa Whatty of Mildura Australia was born in 1874 to Bunsell Freder Ramsay and Julia Franks Ramsay. She had siblings Julia Anne Shanley, Ada Jane Lithgow, and Emma Wilhelmina Ramsay. She married Henry Martin Whatty in 1903 in Port Melbourne, Victoria, and had a child Nancy Edna Whatty. Ellen Whatty died at age 51 years old in 1925 in Mildura.

In 1874, in the year that Ellen Theresa Whatty was born, on May 20th, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis were approved for a patent for "blue jeans with copper rivets". They charged $13.50 per dozen jeans. Although the term "jeans" was first used in 1795 - in Italy - using rivets to reinforce stress points in jeans such as pockets and the bottom of the fly was an original idea..

In 1886, by the time she was just 12 years old, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
