She had siblings John Pitchfork, George Pitchfork, Gertrude Pitchfork, Annie Pitchfork, William Pitchfork, Mary Pitchfork, Elizabeth Pitchfork, Alice Pitchfork, and Henry Pitchfork. Ellen was baptized on October 30, 1881 at Holy Trinity Church in Everton. Ellen Pitchfork died at age 4 years old on May 3, 1886 in Gringley on the Hill, and was buried on May 5, 1886 at Holy Trinity Church in Everton.

In 1881, in the year that Ellen Pitchfork was born, on October 26th, the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" happened in Tombstone, Arizona. The gunfight lasted only 30 seconds - the Earps and Doc Holliday on one side and the "Cowboys" on the other side. The McLaury brothers and Billy Clanton of the Cowboys were killed. Two of the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday were wounded.

In 1886, in the year of Ellen Pitchfork's passing, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
