Ellen Marion (Lord) Lamb of Elwood, Port Phillip City County, VIC Australia was born in 1874 in South Melbourne to John Lord and Sarah Ann Baulch. She had siblings Eliza Annie 'Lily' Lord, Alice Mabel (Lord) Rosier, George Gordon Lord, Albert Clifton Lord, John Duffett Lord, and William Henry Lord. She married Herbert John Lamb, and had children Herbert Gordon Lamb, Eleanor Clifton Lamb, Jack Garnett Lamb, and Lorraine Louise Lamb. Ellen Lamb died at age 73 years old on March 13, 1948 in Elwood.

In 1874, in the year that Ellen Marion 'Nellie' Lord was born, on September 14th, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred in New Orleans - the capital of Louisiana. Some members of the previous Confederate Army assembled for the purpose of "driving the usurpers from power" and the Republican Governor - William P. Kellogg - was physically driven from his office. The former Confederates temporarily replaced him with (the former) Democratic Governor John McEnery. Federal forces arrived, put down the insurrection, and five days later the legally elected government was restored.

In 1886, by the time she was just 12 years old, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
