Eliza May (Letts) Gardiner of Hamilton, Southern Grampians Shire County, VIC Australia was born in 1882 in Dunolly to George James Letts and Emily Louisa Greaves. She had siblings Emily Louisa Letts, Lilian (Letts) Freemantle, Mabel Marion Letts, Eveline Ada Letts, Ethel Frances Letts, Ruby Mildred Letts, George Richard Letts, and Alice Edith Letts. She married John Francis Gardiner in 1904, and had children Gwendolyn May Gardiner and Bertram Francis Gardiner. Eliza Gardiner died at age 88 years old on August 30, 1971 in Hamilton.

In 1882, in the year that Eliza May (Letts) Gardiner was born, on August 3rd, President Chester Arthur signed the 1882 Immigration Act. "Criminals, the insane, or any person unable to take care of him or herself" were not allowed in the U.S. according to the Act. It also imposed a "head tax" on non-citizens entering the U.S.

In 1911, when she was 29 years old, the United States Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil in May. John D. Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.
