    Elias, or Louis, Asser was born on November 21st, 1892 in Ioannina, Greece. He immigrated to the United States where he married Esther Apstein (1900 - 1967) on March 24th, 1921 in Manhattan, New York, and they had three children: Rae (1923 - 2021), Manny Elias (1924 - 1952) and May or Mae (1920 - 2022). On his April, 1942 World War II draft card, Elias said that he was born in Turkey, although his family says that he was born in Greece. He described himself as being five feet six inches tall and as weighing 175 pounds. He had brown eyes, black hair, and a "light" complexion.

Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.
