Eleanor C. Woodfield passed away unexpectedly in her sleep at home in Calais, Vt. on her birthday, Dec. 12, 2010. Eleanor was born to her father William A. Zimmerman and her mother Sally S. Zimmerman Dec. 12, 1946, in Bayshore, N.Y. She grew up in Central Islip, Long Island, N.Y., and later Redding, Conn. She graduated from Joel Barlow High School in 1964, and later receiver a degree in psychology from the University of Connecticut. She then began working in social services for the state of Connecticut. In 1970, she moved to Chelsea and began a career as a teacher. Later, she worked at the Turtle Island Children Center in Montpelier. Primarily, and most recently, she worked as a science teacher at U-32 High School. She taught there for over 20 years, but spent part of that time teaching at the Montpelier-based alternative program. In her time at U-32 she touched the lives of many students and staff members. Shortly prior to her retirement from U-32 in 2008, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. In 2009, she developed a secondary disorder, distonia. In spite of her increasing incapacity, Eleanor strove to be an active person. Eleanor and her husband were co-owners of First in Fitness and she continued to enjoy exercising at the facilities. Among Eleanor's favorite activities were photography, dance, outdoor activities, art projects, and reading. To cope with her illness, she continually looked for outlets for her active passions and was extremely pleased to acquire a recumbent tricycle that allowed her to experience the freedom of outdoor activity, which had become more and more difficult. She was a breast cancer survivor for over seven years and through illnesses tried to continue on with her life with her signature positive attitude. She never ceased researching and learning about options for her care and the enhancement of her life. She enjoyed the company of many friends and continued to be a positive force for her former students. She is survived by her husband, Michael D. Woodfield of Calais; daughter Mila A. E. Woodfield, a junior at Skidmore College; brother and sister-in-law William B. Zimmerman and Gay Zimmerman of Scottsboro, Ala.; husband's daughter Heather Woodfield of New York City; niece Katherine Zimmerman Parker, a Montessori teacher of Houston, Texas; nephew Air Force Major Matthew Zak Zimmerman, currently stationed in San Antonio, Texas; and uncle and aunt John and Joan Zimmerman of Huntington Beach, Calif. She remained a close friend to her former sister-in-law Barbara Zimmerman and Adrienne Capone, Heather Woodfield's mother. Eleanor was extremely proud of her daughter Mila and she was a devoted third parent to her husband's daughter Heather. Eleanor's love radiated throughout the extended family - She will be missed by all.
