    Eleanor (Dowdell) Oryl's mother was Anna Mae Wayne and her father was Thomas Dowdell. She had brother Thomas Dowdell and sister Patrician Dowdell. When she was six, the family was living in Philadelphia and Dad was a time keeper at the State Hospital. Eleanor Dowdell married Robert Oryl in November of 1952 in Sea Isle City, Cape May, New Jersey and she had children Michelle, Deborah, and Robert. When she died, she had 10 grandchildren, and one great granddaughter. While she lived in Sea Isle City for 20 years when she was an adult, she returned to Philadelphia two years before she died.

In 1934, in the year that Eleanor C Oryl was born, on June 6th, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was formed as a response to the stock market crash of 1929 and the continuing Great Depression. Previously, the states regulated the offering and sales of stocks - called "blue sky" laws. They were largely ineffective. Roosevelt created a group (one member was Joseph Kennedy, father of the future President Kennedy) who knew Wall Street well and they defined the mission and operating mode for the SEC. The new organization had broad and stringent rules and oversight and restored public confidence in the stock market in the United States.

In 1963, she was 29 years old when the British Secretary of War, 46 year old John Profumo ,was forced to resign when he lied about an affair with 19 year old Christine Keeler. Keeler was also involved with the Soviet naval attaché and charges of espionage were feared. No proof of spying was ever found.
