Eleanor Augusta Victoria (Langlands) Pitcairn was born in 1866 in Ballarat, Ballarat City County, VIC Australia to George Boyd Langlands and Sarah Jane (Edmonds) Langlands, and had siblings Isabelle May (Langlands) Shand, William Wallace Langlands, Horace Langlands, and James Langlands. She married Neil Tennant Pitcairn, and died at age 76 years old on May 17, 1943 in Melbourne. Eleanor Pitcairn was buried at Preston Cemetery in Bundoora, Darebin City County.

In 1866, in the year that Eleanor Augusta Victoria (Langlands) Pitcairn was born, on May 10th, the "banker's bank" - London bank Overend, Gurney and Company - collapsed, beginning the Panic of 1866. Unemployment went up to 8% and wages went down. Only about 16% of joint-stock companies - a company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders - weathered the Panic.

In 1884, Eleanor was 18 years old when on December 6th, the Washington Monument was completed. Building began in 1848 but was stopped because of lack of funds and also due to the Civil War. It would be dedicated in 1885. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest structure in the world.
