Edwin Mortimer Ruthven was born in 1861 to Edwin Volney Ruthven, and had a brother George Washington Ruthven. He was in a relationship with Dora (Smith) Ruthven, and had children Buel Charles Ruthven, Rose Klipper, Julia Elizabeth (Ruthven) Saunders Hall, and Elwyn Voy Ruthven. Edwin Ruthven died at age 77 years old in 1938, and was buried at Roselawn Cemetery and Mausoleum 1201 S Main St, in McAllen, Hidalgo County, Texas United States.

In 1861, in the year that Edwin Mortimer Ruthven was born, on April 12th, the Civil War began with shots fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. The Confederate Army attacked the Fort a little over a month after the inauguration of President Abraham Lincoln. Fort Sumter surrendered the next day.

In 1906, when he was 45 years old, author Upton Sinclair exposed the public-health threat of the meat-packing industry in his book The Jungle. While his intent was to show the lives of exploited lives of immigrants in Chicago and other industrialized cities, most people were horrified by how the meat that ended up on their tables was handled. There was such an outcry that legislation was passed to regulate meat packing. Sinclair said " "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."
