    THE GETTYSBURG TIMES April 20, 1995 Edwin L Walter, 72, of 75 Belmont Road, Gettysburg, died Tuesday, April 18, at Michael Manor Nursing Center in Gettysburg. Born June 17, 1922, in Adams County, he was the son of the late Harry Luther and Louella Kelly Walter. He was married to Mary V Millhimes Walter. He was a member of the Gettysburg Church of The Brethren. He worked for 30 years at Dolly Madison Inc., in Gettysburg as a furniture maker. Later he worked for the Gettysburg College Custodial Services Department before his retirement in 1989. Surviving in addition to his wife, are four sons, Edwin P., of Reinholds, Steven H., of New Oxford, Thomas A., of Biglerville, and William J., of Deerfield, N.Y.; two daughters, Debra J Hoffman of Gettysburg and Patrice L Schoff of Bakerton, W. Va.; 19 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, George Walter of Gettysburg and Franklin Walter of Orrtanna; and one sister, Anna Thomas of Gettysburg. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 20, 2:00 at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, with his pastor the Rev. Joel Nogle officiating. Interment will be in Fairfield Union Cemetery, Fairfield.

In 1922, in the year that Edwin L Walter was born, on June 22, coal miners in Herrin Illinois, were on strike (coal miners had been on strike nationally since April 1). The striking miners were outraged at the strikebreakers (scabs) that the company had brought in and laid siege to the mine. Three union workers were killed when gunfire was exchanged. The next day, union miners killed 23 strikebreakers and mine guards. No one, on either side, ever faced jail time.

In 1943, Edwin was 21 years old when on March 31st, the Broadway musical Oklahoma! opened. Written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II (the first of their string of successful collaborations), audiences loved it. The musical ran for 2,212 performances originally and was made into a movie in 1954.
