Edwin Giles Ford was born in 1834 at Kenton in Devon County, England United Kingdom to Hugh Ford and Susanna (Clark) Ford, and had siblings Martha Ford and Frances Mary Ford. He was in a relationship with Jane (Young) Ford, and had a child Tasman Hugh Ford. Edwin Ford died at age 95 years old in November 1930, and was buried at Cornelian Bay Cemetery in New Town, Hobart City Council County, TAS Australia.

  • Introduction

    The Mercury, Hobart. 14th November 1930. - OBITUARY LATE MR. E. G. FORD. The funeral took place yesterday of the late Mr. Edwin Giles Ford, aged 96 years, of King Street, Bellerive. The remains were interred at Cornelian Bay Cemetery, and the service over the grave was conducted by the Rev. H. C. Brammall, of Bellerive. The chief mourners were his two sons, Captain Hugh Ford, of the Pilot Station, and Mr. Tasman Ford, of Launceston, and Mr. W. Harris, of Garden Island Creek. There were also present the Master Warden ( Mr. J. G. Turner ), the secretary of the Hobart Marine Board ( Mr. Eric Hawson ), and the Harbourmaster ( Captain H. J. Watchorn ). The Mr. Ford's wife predeceased him. He leaves other daughters and sons settled in other States. Mr. Ford came out to Tasmania from Devonshire, England, in the Ocean Prince, which made an excellent passage on that occasion, and he is the last survivor of those that came to Tasmania in that ship. The original Mr. William Gibson, of Gibson's Flour Mills, was in the same ship. Mr. Ford landed in Hobart on his 21st birthday. He spent some time in New Zealand, and then returned to Hobart as a master builder and contractor, being in partnership with the firm of Cheverton, Ford, and Pye. He later joined Mr. W. Harris, and a timber mill was started at Garden Island Creek. They owned two vessels, one of which was the Mary Wadley, for shipping their timber. Their timber yard was on the Hobart wharf near the shop of Messrs. R. R. Rex and Son. ( the ship was the Ocean Chief not Ocean Prince )
