Edward Alexander Gunn was born in 1892 in Allendale, Hepburn Shire County, VIC Australia to Sarah Ann (Ward) Gunn and Daniel Gunn, and had siblings Sarah Myra (Gunn) Mallett, Daniel Wallace Gunn, Annie Louisa (Gunn) Fullerton, Alice Emma Jessie Wilson, Beatrice Hilda (Gunn) Driver, Ruby Eunice Maud (Gunn) Palfrey, Kenneth Daniel Victor Gunn, Muriel Gladys (Gunn) Jordan, and Alma Gunn. He married Annie (Lewis) Gunn, and died at age 29 years old on July 14, 1922 in Kensington, Melbourne City County. Edward Gunn was buried at Fawkner Memorial Park.

In 1892, in the year that Edward Alexander Gunn was born, on October 5th, the Dalton Gang was shot. The Gang was attempting to rob two banks - simultaneously - in Coffeyville Kansas but word spread of the robberies and townspeople with guns greeted them when they left the banks. Four members of the gang were killed - only Emmett Dalton survived his wounds and spent 14 years in prison.

In 1902, by the time he was merely 10 years old, the first Rose Bowl game was played in Pasadena, California. Called the "Tournament East–West football game" at the time, the Michigan Wolverines (East) played the Stanford Indians (West) - the Wolverines won 49 - 0. (The Stanford captain requested an end to the game with 8 minutes remaining.) The Tournament of Roses Parade began in 1890 and the football game began as a way to boost tourism in the area.
