Edna Margaret (Kerns) Eckstein was born on September 7, 1888 in Virginia United States to Jacob C Kerns and Alice Virginia (Daily) Kerns, and had a brother Irving Benard Kerns. She married Pinkney Lee Eckstein in 1914 in Baltimore, Maryland, and they were married until Pinkney's death on May 26, 1946 in Frederick County. She was the parent of Virginia Eudora (Eckstein ) Plitt. She would also marry Blake Smith. Edna Eckstein died at age 95 years old on October 18, 1983 in Essex, MD.

In 1888, in the year that Edna Margaret (Kerns) Eckstein was born, on January 12th, the 'Schoolhouse Blizzard' blanketed Dakota Territory. Montana, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas were hit, leaving 235 dead. Many of those who perished were children on their way home from school. The day was relatively warm when it began and the blizzard hit unexpectedly, catching most by surprise.

In 1928, at the age of 40 years old, Edna was alive when aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
